A brief history of cuff links
Cufflinks came on the scene around the 17th century because men sought something more elaborate to hold their sleeves together rather than ribbons or strings. The first cufflinks were made with two gold or silver button end pieces held together by a piece of chain. As they progressed cufflinks were worn more formally for tuxedos and formal attire. They would be made from stones, precious metal, or fabric. After the Industrial Revolution rods replaced the chains and fasteners with easy to close clips. During the 19th century the cufflink enjoyed greater popularity by becoming worn widely by business men and all classes of man.
